The Archie W. Bedell, M.D., Ph.D. Award of Excellence, also known as “The Archie,” is named in honor of the late Archie W. Bedell, M.D., Ph.D., of Ottawa Lake, Michigan. Dr. Bedell was a long-time member and a past president of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. Throughout his professional career, Dr. Bedell distinguished himself in his service to the Academy, the specialty of family medicine and to the community at large (including the local, state, national and international levels). He was a pioneer in family medicine education and a champion of underrepresented constituents. This award was established by the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors in 2001 to honor individuals in the State of Michigan who distinguish themselves by their actions on behalf of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians and the health care community, similarly as to how Dr. Bedell once did.
Eligibility
The nominee for this award may be a physician, non-physician or a corporate entity. It is not a requirement to be an active MAFP member.
Category Specific Nomination Packet Requirements and Criteria
- Nominator must submit a one-page cover letter/statement summarizing why he or she believes the nominee should receive this award. The cover letter/statement should summarize how the nominee has distinguished his or herself in at least one of the following areas, with such accomplishments recently occurring or throughout a lifetime of service:
- Distinguished service to the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians;
- Distinguished service to the specialty of family medicine; and/or,
- Distinguished service to the community at large, including the local, state, national or international levels.
Additional Entry Requirements
It is the responsibility of the nominator to assemble a nomination packet as complete and comprehensive as possible to demonstrate the qualifications and credentials of the candidate being nominated. Please see the “Category Specific Nomination Packet Requirements and Criteria” under each award category and complete those requirements for the nomination packet, and be sure to also including the following information in the packet:
- Complete the Official Nomination Form (click here to download a writeable copy of the nomination form to include with the nomination packet).
- Submit an up-to-date copy of the nominee’s resume or vitae.
- Submit a high-resolution (300 dpi or more) photo of the nominee. This can be sent on a CD, on a flash drive or emailed to amcintosh@mafp.com. The photo should have been taken within the past five years.
- Submit any additional supporting materials to the nomination packet that the nominator feels are essential for the MAFP Nominating Committee and Board of Directors to review to make the final decision.
Entry Guidelines
- There is no cost to nominate an individual for one of the award categories. Self-nominations are accepted.
- Nomination packets must follow all of the “Category Specific Nomination Packet Requirements and Criteria” and the “Additional Entry Requirements” information to be eligible.
- Be as specific and detailed when describing the qualities, assets and accomplishments of the nominee.
- Submit all elements of the nomination, including letters of recommendation from other individuals, in one comprehensive package in a two-pocket folder, in a binder no larger than a 1-inch spine or via email to amcintosh@mafp.com.
- All nominations are due no later than Saturday, December 1, 2012 to:

This Award, along with others, will be presented during the 2013 MAFP Scientific Assembly at the Somerset Inn in Troy, Michigan on Saturday, April 13, 2013.
