"The Archie" Award

The Archie W. Bedell, M.D., Ph.D.
Award of Excellence
“The Archie”

Background:

Each year there are individuals in the State of Michigan who distinguish themselves by their actions on behalf of the Academy or the community at large (including the local, state, national and international levels). The Archie W. Bedell, M.D., Ph.D. Award of Excellence --“The Archie” was established by the Board in 2001 to honor such individuals.

The Award of Excellence is named in honor of the late Archie W. Bedell, M.D., Ph.D., of Ottawa Lake, Michigan. Dr. Bedell was a long-time member of the MAFP and a past president. Throughout his professional career, Dr. Bedell distinguished himself in service to the Academy, the specialty of family practice, and to the community at large, including the local, state, national and international levels. He was a pioneer in family practice education and a champion of underrepresented constituents. It is believed that establishment of “The Archie” serves to honor Dr. Bedell’s lifetime work on behalf of the specialty of family practice and the Academy and to in turn honor individuals who have distinguished themselves in service to the Academy or the community at large.

Nomination Process:

The Award of Excellence will be under the auspices of the Committee on Communications and Membership. The committee will annually solicit nominees through all appropriate avenues available to the committee. Individuals may be nominated by others or may self-nominate. The committee will review all nominations and recommend a maximum of two individuals a year for the Award of Excellence, with final approval by the Board of Directors. Under certain circumstances, the Board may consider more than two awards in one year.

The Award(s) of Excellence will be presented at the Delegates’ Luncheon. That date for 2005 is June 20 at Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City.

Criteria:

All nominees must have distinguished themselves in at least “one” of the following areas, and with such accomplishments recently occurring or throughout a lifetime of service:
  1. Distinguished service to the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.
  2. Distinguished service to the specialty of family practice.
  3. Distinguished service to the community at large, including the local, state, national or international levels.

Other Specifics of the Award:

Nominees for the Award of Excellence may be both physicians, non-physicians and corporate entities.

Each nominee must have complete nomination materials as set forth by the Committee on Communications and Membership and by the deadline established annually by the committee for consideration of nominations.
