Family Medicine Educator of the Year
The MAFP's Family Practice Educator of the Year award is designed to "recognize persons who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors of the Academy, have made outstanding contributions to education for family practice in undergraduate, graduate and continuing education spheres.
Criteria
- Nominee must be an active member in good standing of the Academy.
- A statement on why the nominator believes the nominee should receive the award must be submitted. The statement should include sufficient specific data to provide a working knowledge of nominee's educational efforts. Typed statement must not exceed one page in length.
- A typed copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae, including data relating to MAFP membership and other medical organizations, must be submitted with particular emphasis upon educational activities.
- A recent head and shoulders business photo of the nominee must be submitted.
- Letter of endorsement from the nominator must be submitted with the nomination. Other letters of support must come from the following groups:
- One letter must be from a former student or resident
- One letter must be from a family practice educator from another institution
- Other endorsement letters from individuals who have personally worked with or have been taught by the nominee will be considered. Please limit those endorsement letters to six. It is the responsibility of the nominator to provide such documentation.
Contributions of the nominee to home [educational] institution, local and regional educational institutions will be considered in the selection process.
2007 Family Medicine Educator of the Year
Eric Skye, M.D.
The Board of Directors is proud to announce Dr. Eric Skye as the 2007 Family Medicine Educator of the Year. Dr. Skye received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School as a part of its Honors Program. He completed his Residency in Family Medicine in the U.S. Air Force at the David Grant Medical Center at Travis AFB in California. In 1996, he completed a Fellowship in Faculty Development from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Skye is board certified in Family Medicine and is the retiring chair of the MAFP Residency Directors’ Committee.
In his commitment to teaching, Dr. Skye has held various academic, administrative, and clinical appointments. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at U of M since 1999 and has been a Family Centered Experience Faculty at U of M’s Medical School since 2003. Dr. Skye is also the Assistant Chair of the Department of Medicine for Chelsea Community Hospital and the Program Director for the Family Practice Residency Training Program at U of M’s Department of Family Medicine since 2002. Soon Dr. Skye will become Associate Chair for Educational Programs where he will work the Directors of Residencies, Fellowships and Medical Student Clerkship training programs. He has maintained membership in the Academy throughout his career. Dr. Skye is also a member of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors.
Dr. Skye has numerous presentations and awards to his credit. In 2001, he was honored with the Resident’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the U of M Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Skye also received its Resident Appreciation Award in 2002 and again in 2004. Best Doctors, Inc. named Dr. Skye one of the “Best Doctors in America” in 2006.
As a family physician and teacher, Dr. Skye has been committed to the specialty of family medicine and shaping family physicians for future generations.
Dr. Skye and his wife, Lu-Ayn Skye, live in Dexter and have two daughters, Carissa and Rachael Skye.
