The Family Physician of the Year is selected annually from nominations by MAFP members, component chapters, and the county medical societies. The award is presented to a physician who exemplifies the tradition of the family doctor and the contribution of the family physician to the continuing health of Michigan citizens.
Nominees are presented to the MAFP's Executive Committee for its recommendation, with final approval resting with the Board of Directors.
As a guideline, the selection will be made based on the following criteria. Nominees must:

Criteria
- Be an active member in good standing of the Academy.
- Spend at least 50 percent of his/her time in patient care
- Letters from patients in support of the nomination are encouraged.
- Letters from physician colleagues/hospital administrators, etc., are also encouraged.
- Participate in community affairs
- Letters from community.
All previously nominated physicians are eligible for reconsideration, but must be re-nominated.

2007 MAFP Family Physician of the Year Award
Douglas Colberg, M.D.
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Douglas Colberg, MD as the 2007 Family Physician of the Year.
Dr. Colberg received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. He then went on to
Complete his medical residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, MI. Dr. Colberg is a board certified family physician.
Dr. Colberg practiced for two years in Aberdeen, South Dakota before making his move to Michigan. He has been in solo practice in Sturgis since 1992 and prior to then was in practice for seven years with Dr. Robert Smith in Colon, MI. In addition to serving the Sturgis community in his family medicine practice, Dr. Colberg also does emergency medicine at Sturgis Hospital, where he has served on the Utilization Review Committee, Obstetrics Committee, the ER Committee and is a past chief of staff.
Throughout his career, Dr. Colberg has been involved in organized medicine, going back to 1989 when he served as MSMS’ AMA YPS delegate. He has been a member of MSMS since 1985 and has served on the Rural Health Task Force, the Committee on Federal Legislation and the Task Force on Government and Healthcare. He has also been actively involved in his St. Joseph County Medical Society and served as president in 1989 and again in 1996.
Dr. Colberg began his service on the MAFP Board of Directors in 1999, representing his colleagues in the Southwest Chapter. In 2002 he was elected to the Office of Second Vice President. He was then on track to move up through the ranks to the Office of President, a role he assumed in June of 2004.
Prior to his election to the Board of Directors, Dr. Colberg served as chair of the Committee on Legislation and Governmental Affairs and the Committee on Economics and Practice Environments.
Dr. Colberg and his wife, Jennifer, live in Stugis, MI. They have three daughters Devon, Allison and Suzanna.
