Membership Services

The MAFP’s Board of Directors, committees and staff continually strive to expand and improve membership services. The following highlights some of the current services and programs believed to be of benefit and interest to members.

Legislative Advocacy

  • The Academy is actively involved in the legislative arena. Michigan family physicians continue to be confronted with reimbursement issues and scope of practice issues, either through proposed legislation or regulatory revisions. Members of the Committee on Legislation and Governmental Affairs monitor and respond to issues that impact the specialty and family physicians at both the State and Federal level. Legislative Alerts are sent out regularly when the Academy needs member direct input to their legislators on issues of concern to family physicians. The Academy also schedules meetings with legislators at the Capitol when legislators and/or members have concerns with various Bills in either the House or Senate. The MAFP is working diligently to form relationships with legislators.
  • The following healthcare issues are currently being monitored by the Committee on Legislation and Governmental Affairs and MAFP staff:
    • Increased Access to Healthcare
    • Medicaid/Medicare Reform
    • Tort Reform
    • Reimbursement rates focused on preventive medicine and primary care
    • Educational funding for family physicians and their retention in Michigan
    • Mental Health Parity
    • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Reform

Key Contact Program...

In fulfilling this Mission, members of the Committee on Legislation and Governmental Affairs are seeking your assistance in identifying legislators you may know personally or through a friend or member of your family. If you have such contacts, please contact the Academy at info@mafp.com to let us know your contacts and your areas of interest, e.g., scope of practice issues, rural health, state regulations, reimbursement issues, etc. We will then be in a position to contact you when we need your assistance in contacting the legislator.

From time to time it is essential for the Academy to call on family physician members to testify at hearings on legislation that will impact your practice or the patients you serve. This information will assist the MAFP in identifying such members when occasions arise and we need your input and expertise.

We need your assistance in meeting the legislative challenges confronting family physicians. Please consider becoming a participant in the Key Contact Program.

Committee on Public Health

The Academy’s Committee on Public Health is working to develop programs to increase public awareness on the scope of family medicine and the quality of care provided by family physicians.

MAFP Offers Physician Opportunity Posting Service (POPs)

The Michigan Academy of Family Physicians has created a Physician Opportunity Posting Service (POPs) for its members. It is designed to:
  • Provide information on members seeking opportunities in Michigan to potential employers, and
  • Provide information on opportunities in the State of Michigan from hospitals, communities and individuals who are recruiting for family physicians.

Reimbursement Issues

Members of the Committee on Economics and Practice Environments continues to meet quarterly with BCBSM on reimbursement issues. The MAFP also works closely on such issues, when appropriate, with the Michigan Osteopathic Association, the Michigan State Medical Society and the Michigan Association of Health Plans. Updates are reported in MAFP.COMmunication.

MAFP.COMmunication

The Academy’s quarterly publication, MAFP.COMmunication, is designed to be reader friendly and is intended to serve as an ongoing communication with members. We would be pleased to receive feedback from members on how we can continue to improve this publication and always welcome “Letters to the Editor” on any issue reported.

CME Courses

To continue meeting your patients needs, you need to keep learning. That's why providing high quality CME courses is one of the most important responsibilities of the Academy. A variety of AAFP sources - meetings, courses and conferences, publications and resources - are designed to provide you insight on the latest research and clinical training.

Membership Recognizes Commitment to Education

The Academy’s CME requirement assures your continued pursuit of education. Your membership demonstrates your continued education; your patients will appreciate your commitment to excellence.

Members may use the AAFP's CME Records (CMER) Program to save time in recording their hours. This complimentary program is an exclusive Academy service. Meeting the Academy's CME requirement qualifies you for continued membership, and saves you the hassles of additional paperwork.
  • You will qualify for the AMA's Physician Recognition Award.
  • AAFP will submit your name to the American Board of Family Practice as having completed sufficient CME for recertification.
  • You may find it easier in obtaining hospital privileges.

Practice Management

Even an experienced physician can often use some help creating systems and procedures to improve practice effectiveness. AAFP provides a wealth of resources designed especially for the family physician.

Whether you need to recruit a new partner, reduce the risk of malpractice litigation, learn to review a contract, or install/update your computer operations, AAFP can help.

Insurance Programs

The Academy offers members a full range of insurance programs. The Academy-endorsed programs are under the auspices of the MAFP's Executive Committee and are regularly monitored to make certain that programs are meeting established standards and that the MAFP has negotiated agreements at the most competitive premiums available.
