The federal government and all state legislatures passed laws in the mid-1970s to curb the influence on elections by a small number of wealthy individuals. The federal and state acts allow for the formation of committees to encourage people with the same interests to organize at the grass roots level to support candidates of their choice.
PACs collect contributions from a large number of people and then make contributions from that pool to political campaigns.

What is a PAC?
What is the Family Medicine PAC?
The Family Medicine Political Action Committee (Family Medicine PAC) is a voluntary political action committee that provides Michigan family physicians a strong voice in the Michigan state legislature and helps the Academy in its efforts to impact both health policy and the overall practice environment.
Mission Statement
The Family Medicine PAC provides an opportunity to MAFP members and others who are interested in furthering the goals and objectives of family medicine to collectively support candidates for public office in Michigan who are interested in and supportive of issues that serve to uphold the mission of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.
Purpose
- Encourage family physicians to take a more active role in state governmental affairs
- Assist family physicians in understanding the actions of government and its effect on them, their practice and their patients
- Build awareness of the Academy among members of the legislature and help impact related policy discussions.
Why Should You Belong to the Family Medicine PAC?
Family Medicine PAC contributions go directly to support legislators who are informed and committed to family medicine’s business and practice management issues. The results are that family medicine interests are more likely to receive greater attention among the many competing interests and constant stream of proposals put forth for consideration. By belonging to the Family Medicine PAC, you have the opportunity to shape the future of health care issues that affect you, your practice and your patients.
Why is the Family Medicine PAC Important?
- The Family Medicine PAC will give family physicians an important new opportunity where our voice will be heard – a contribution from the Family Medicine PAC will deliver not only money but a message that this group makes its decisions on contributions according to the best interests of family physicians and the patients they serve.
- The Family Medicine PAC can make larger contributions to political campaigns than most family physicians will make. This encourages candidates for political office to reach out to groups that have a PAC and address their issues.
- The Family Medicine PAC will allow family physicians greater access to lawmakers.
- The Family Medicine PAC demonstrates the Academy’s commitment to being competitive in the political process and provides credibility to family physicians.
What Issues are Important to the Family Medicine PAC?
- Protecting medical reimbursement from larger cuts at the national, state and private insurer level
- Prohibiting further expansion of other providers and disciplines into primary care’s scope of practice – halt encroachment by mid-level providers who want to be more like physicians than their training allows
- Restructuring Michigan’s Medicaid program – ensure there is care for the most vulnerable, but not at the expense of physicians
- Maintaining and reduce medical liability rates
- Providing medical coverage accessible to all
