Angelo Patsalis, MD, FAAFP Vanguard Award

SEMAFP Grants Available for Graduating Residents

We remember our dear friend, leader, and former Southeastern Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (SEMAFP) President Dr. Angelo Patsalis, who succumbed to complications from COVID-19 in April 2020.

We reflect upon the years many served with him on several boards and committees and remember the unwavering commitment he had to family medicine and to the greater Detroit community. Dr. Patsalis' close friend and SEMAFP board member, Dr. Chris Bush, stated so accurately that, “Angelo was a dynamic, knowledgeable leader with a wealth of experience. He was good with people and very kind. He had the certitude of conviction and passionately fought for the disadvantaged. It is because of Angelo that this MAFP chapter still exists.”

SEMAFP board members are continuing Angelo’s legacy, and are very proud to announce the creation of the Angelo Patsalis MD, FAAFP Vanguard Award. The Vanguard Award ($2,500 and a personalized plaque) will be granted annually to two graduating family medicine residents who have committed to practice in southeast Michigan. The award is intended to acknowledge young physicians who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to community service. Through this award, Dr. Patsalis' legacy will continue to inspire future generations of physician leaders, and along with the persistent work of the SEMAFP board members, his mission will continue.

The first award will be granted in May 2021 to two graduating family medicine residents. For information regarding the application process, please contact Rose Moschelli at rmoschel@med.wayne.edu. The SEMAFP, a Component Chapter of MAFP, exists to promote excellence in healthcare and the betterment of the health of the people of Southeastern Michigan.
