Family Medicine Leads Scholars and Scholarship Winners Announced

Family Medicine Leads, the AAFP Foundation Education Signature Program, focuses on the future of the family medicine specialty by supporting efforts to fill the workforce pathway with the best and the brightest, as well as developing more and better-trained family medicine leaders through attendance at the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students and participation in the Emerging Leader Institute.

Family Medicine Leads Scholarship

Each year, AAFP Foundation provides Family Medicine Leads Scholarships for attending National Conference—THE place for residents and medical students to experience family medicine through educational programming, procedural workshops, leadership opportunities, interaction and networking with family physicians and peers from across the country, and an expansive Expo Hall of residency programs, employers, and other organizations.

Among this year's 240 scholarship winners are the following residents and students from Michigan. Each winner will receive a $600 scholarship provided by the AAFP Foundation to attend National Conference.

Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute

Four members of Michigan Academy of Family Physicians have been selected as 2023 Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute Scholars, a year-long workforce initiative of AAFP Foundation.

  • Kelsey Bean, Class of 2025, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
  • Abby Struble, Class of 2025, Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Melanie Valentin, MS, Class of 2024, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

Each Scholar will receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students and participate in the 8th class of the FM Leads Emerging Leader Institute, July 27-30.

Upon conclusion of the Emerging Leader Institute in-depth workshops in three leadership tracks (Policy & Public Health, Personal & Practice, and Philanthropic & Mission-Driven) and a project management session, this year’s 30 Scholars will virtually attend longitudinal sessions while working with a volunteer family physician mentor to develop and complete a leadership project based on their track.
