Drs. Zachariah DeYoung, Leah Abbott Support Upper Peninsula Area Health Education CenterZachariah DeYoung, MD recently hosted an in-person Q&A session at the Michigan Technological University Pre-Health Profession class, discussing his time abroad with the military and working in free clinics.
"Dr. DeYoung's presentation helped me reaffirm that going into medicine is the right decision for me," said Micaela Geborkoff, Medical Laboratory Science undergraduate student, at Michigan Technological University. Leah Abbott, MD recently led an Advanced Skills and Knowledge (ASK) session with medical students at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine UP Campus. Dr. Abbott taught students about conflicts of interest in medical practice and how to avoid them. Susan Tincknell, student programs administrator for the Upper Peninsula Clinical Campus, said Dr. Abbott will be teaching students during their outpatient family medicine clerkship. "We couldn't be happier to have her," Tincknell said. The Michigan Area Health Education Center (MI-AHEC) was established in 2010 to improve access to primary care for all Michigan residents, many of whom live in areas that have too few health professionals. Through recruitment and retention initiatives, as well as special clinical education programs, MI-AHEC seeks to expose disadvantaged students to health care opportunities, expand the number of underrepresented minorities in the health professions, and encourage students and health professionals to work in areas that need greater access to primary care providers. The national AHEC program was created by Congress in 1971.
