CME Credit Update: MAFP Advocates for Rule Clarity in Testimony

As reported, recent changes to state auditing and regulatory practices have created a gap in explicit recognition of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians’ Continuing Medical Education programs, which have been recognized in the state for more than forty years. Despite this decades-long history of acceptance, MAFP and members alike called upon the Michigan Board of Medicine to amend Administrative Rule 338.2443 (acceptable continuing education; requirements; limitations) to explicitly include the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) as a recognized CME accreditor. This request also aligned with AAFP and CE Broker’s request for change.

On May 16, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs held a public hearing on the Michigan Board of Medicine Administrative Rules. Thank you to members for submitting comments on the issue. Here is written testimony submitted by President Rachel M. Klamo, DO, MS, FAAFP. Chief Executive Officer Karlene Ketola, MSA, CAE testified in person at the hearing.  

Currently, LARA is working through public comments and the Board of Medicine’s Rules Committee will reconvene to review these comments and make recommended changes for the full board. Once the Rules Committee makes its recommendations, the full Board of Medicine will vote on whether to incorporate additional changes to the rules based on public comments and the Rules Committee’s recommendations. We expect this process to play out over the next couple of months.

While MAFP waits for these rule changes to be made, the organization is pursuing joint providership of Michigan State Medical Society and MAFP to ensure that all future MAFP CME program credits are accepted by the State of Michigan.
