Dr. Shammami is the faculty advisor for the Family Medicine Interest Group at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, which received the 2025 AAFP Program of Excellence Overall Award. This national award is presented annually to a faculty or staff member who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication supporting FMIGs and inspiring the next generation of family physicians. Dr. Shammami will be recognized at the FMIG Awards Breakfast during the AAFP FUTURE Conference on Friday, Aug. 1. “Your work embodies the spirit of this award and the legacy of Joyce Jeardeau herself—compassionate, visionary, and deeply committed to the next generation of family physicians,” Dr. Mitchell said. The student who nominated Dr. Shammami highlighted his exceptional dedication and mentorship as the FMIG Faculty Advisor, attributing his consistent involvement and key role in the group’s success. Dr. Shammami’s dedication resulted in the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine FMIG hosting more events than any other student group on campus. “His hands-on approach and regular check-ins set him apart from other faculty advisors, allowing us to build a strong foundation for our programming and ensuring that each event was planned and executed smoothly,” said the nominating student.
