Oakland University FMIG Honored with National AAFP Program of Excellence Award

The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) has been named a recipient of the 2025 American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Program of Excellence Overall Award, recognizing it as one of the top FMIGs in the nation. This award celebrates the creativity, leadership, and dedication of student-led groups that promote family medicine on their campuses. The recognition reflects a year of exceptional work by the Oakland University FMIG and signals the group’s potential to drive lasting impact in workforce development and health equity.

“The students, faculty, and staff at your institution who have dedicated their time and effort to building a strong FMIG have truly set themselves apart,” said Karen B. Mitchell, MD, FAAFP, vice president of national residency and academic partnerships for AAFP.

Members of the FMIG will be formally recognized during the FMIG Celebration Breakfast on Friday, Aug. 1 during the AAFP FUTURE Conference in Kansas City.

“Family medicine is stronger because of the leadership and values that the interest group has demonstrated on your campus,” Dr. Mitchell said.

FMIGs play a vital role in addressing the growing national shortage of primary care physicians. These student-led organizations are often the first introduction many medical students have to family medicine, offering mentorship, clinical exposure, and community engagement.
