Upcoming Coffee Hours Offer a Chance to Advocate for Physician-Led Care

Even with the Michigan Legislature back from its two-week break, MAFP continues to be concerned about advancing bills we strongly oppose. MAFP encourages all members to contact their legislators and participate in district meetings to ensure our voices are heard.

House Bill 4399 — Nurse Practitioner Independent Practice
Since its introduction this spring, MAFP has voiced strong opposition to House Bill 4399, which would grant independent practice to nurse practitioners who have 1,000 hours of experience practicing as a nurse practitioner in Michigan or another state, and have completed at least 15 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle in pharmacology, therapeutics, or prescribing. On Nov. 5, the House Health Policy Committee passed HB 4399 and the bill has now been referred to the House Rules Committee. MAFP is joined in our opposition to this bill by the Michigan State Medical Society, Michigan Osteopathic Association, Michigan Chapter-American Academy of Pediatrics, Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology, the Michigan Radiological Association, and the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.

House Bill 4925 — Alternative Licensing Pathway for International Medical Graduates
MAFP has expressed strong opposition to House Bill 4925, addressing both the bill sponsor and the Health Policy Committee members. You can see our concerns outlined in this letter from MAFP President Bashar Yalldo, MD, FAAFP to the Health Policy Committee Chair, Rep. Curt VanderWall. This bill would allow internationally educated physicians to bypass Michigan’s licensure process and national residency standards. While work has been done to improve the bill, MAFP remains concerned that this legislation lowers the standard of patient care and may inadvertently negatively impact patient safety. Without taking testimony, on Nov. 12, the House Health Policy Committee passed HB 4925 and referred it to the House Rules Committee.

Voice Your Concerns to Legislators at In-District Coffee Hours
MAFP continues to voice our concerns to legislators and we encourage our members to do the same. An updated list of in-district legislative coffee hours is now available for MAFP members. These informal gatherings offer valuable opportunities to speak directly with lawmakers about issues impacting your patients, communities, and the future of primary care. View the updated list here and make plans to connect with a legislator at a gathering near you.
