Urge Lawmakers to Pass Legislation to Maintain Michigan’s Participation in the Interstate Medical Licensure CompactMichigan’s membership in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) will sunset on March 29, 2026, creating an urgent need for legislative action. Without passage of Senate Bill 303 or House Bill 5455, Michigan will exit the IMLC, putting thousands of physician licenses at risk and significantly disrupting patient care across the state. MAFP has been working directly with key lawmakers to advance this issue. At this critical time, we ask members to reach out to their elected officials to reinforce the message and keep the momentum going. Since 2019, 5,346 physicians have been issued Michigan licenses through the compact. If Michigan leaves the IMLC, these physicians could lose their ability to treat patients in both Michigan and other states. Assuming each physician sees an average of 20 patients per day, more than 100,000 patient appointments daily could be canceled beginning March 29, 2026. Because many physicians schedule patients weeks in advance, disruptions and cancellations may begin even sooner. Passage of SB 303 or HB 5455 is critical to maintaining physician workforce stability, protecting patient access to care, and preventing widespread appointment cancellations that would negatively impact communities across Michigan.
