Board of Medicine Administrative Rule Change Finalized; MAFP Brings Members a Big Win on CMEFor more than 40 years, the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians’ continuing medical education programs have been recognized by the State of Michigan for their role in supporting the professional development of Michigan’s family physicians. Despite this decades-long history of acceptance, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) hired a contractor, CE Broker, which created a gap in explicit recognition of MAFP's CME accreditation. On March 19, LARA announced that the Michigan Board of Medicine General Rules were issued, and the rules include the addition of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) as a CME partner. While MAFP waited for these rule changes to be made, the organization worked to ensure that all MAFP CME program credits were approved by the other accredited providers. This has been a long-term advocacy effort that has worked its way through a slow-moving regulatory process. MAFP has tirelessly advocated for regulatory updates to preserve the validity and accessibility of these essential programs. To that end, in 2024, MAFP requested the Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery follow suit by accepting AAFP’s CME programs. Despite our efforts, the board denied the inclusion in the rules. With the Michigan Board of Medicine rule change in effect, we will now direct our advocacy efforts back to the osteopathic board.
