Overview

Palliative symptom management often begins in primary care — not in a palliative care clinic. This 60-minute, case-based session prepares family medicine clinicians to deliver primary palliative care, assessing and relieving suffering in serious illness wherever care is delivered: clinic, hospital, nursing home, or home. Participants will learn how to:

  • Perform a structure system assessment in a patient with serious illness including routine screening using a validated tool (ESAS).
  • Apply symptom management strategies for common symptoms of serious illness.
  • Initiate and titrate opioids for pain in advanced illness, including opioid conversion, renal/hepatic dose adjustment, and bowel prophylaxis.
  • Recognize when specialty palliative care or hospice referral is indicated.
