Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is dedicated to advancing family medicine and assisting family physicians and their practices as they work to ensure high-quality, cost-effective healthcare for patients of all ages. Whether you’re a medical student, a family medicine resident, an established physician, or transitioning into retirement, MAFP is your partner in the profession.

Dues & CME

Dues: To join the Academy, you must pay both AAFP and MAFP dues, as membership is unified. If you live in Southeast Michigan, you must also pay local dues.

The payment deadline is Jan. 1, as Academy membership is on a January-December calendar year.

You may pay dues in full via Quick Pay or monthly installments throughout the year. Or, you may elect to automatically renew your membership / pay dues annually.

Continuing Medical Education: Active members must report 150 CME credits every three calendar years to maintain membership. This is called a re-election cycle. Click here to check your re-election status online. Click here to view your transcript.

CME must be earned and reported by Dec. 31 of the year your re-election cycle ends.

Unified Membership

Academy membership is unified, meaning members must belong to both the national AAFP and the chapter in the state where they live. This ensures members' interests are represented both at the national level (e.g., Congress, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and state level (e.g., Michigan Legislature, state licensing board, in-state health systems and payers).

Therefore, as an Academy member, you are part of the family of 4,200 family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students across Michigan and 133,500 nationwide.

The Academy supports physicians at every phase of professional life, providing access to tools, programs, education, networking, and resources to set you up for success. Your Academy also works as a strong advocate on your behalf with elected officials, insurance companies, and regulators.

Renewing Your Membership

Reinstate: If your membership was recently cancelled, you may reinstate your membership by calling the AAFP Member Resource Center at 1-800-274-2237. This option requires payment of owed dues. When you are reinstated as a member, there is no gap in your years of membership and you will retain your original enrollment date. This is important if you are ever interested in applying for AAFP's Degree of Fellow (FAAFP) or hope to become a Life member in the future.

Rejoin: If your membership was dropped awhile back, you may choose to rejoin by submitting a new application for membership. When you rejoin, you are given a new enrollment date, as if you are a new member, and you do not receive credit for your previous years of membership. To qualify, you must:

  • Pay the first year of dues in full, or enroll in the installment payment plan
  • Provide proof of having earned at least 100 CME credits within the last two years (if your membership lapsed less than two years ago)

Change in Member Type, Relocation

Change in Member Type: If you have retired or interrupted practice, call the AAFP Member Resource Center at 1-800-274-2237 to make necessary changes and determine if you are eligible for Life or Inactive membership.

Relocation: To transfer your state membership to Michigan if you are moving here, or to transfer out of Michigan if you are moving to another state, call the AAFP Member Resource Center at 1-800-274-2237.
