ABFM Now Recognizes PCMH Certification by BCBSM as Maintenance of Certification Performance Improvement Credit

October 27, 2021 - To have your practice be patient-centered medical home (PCMH) certified, you implement quality improvement processes. Previously, the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) only accepted National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) PCMH certification for Performance Improvement (PI) credit.

ABFM Board of Directors member Wendy Biggs, MD (Saginaw) had previously submitted PCMH Certification credit for PI credit. Her residency practice received PCMH recertification from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and she wondered if it was accepted for PI credit. Not seeing BCBSM PCMH certification on the PI list on the ABFM website, she contacted the ABFM staff, and within hours, BCBSM PCMH certification was on the website to claim as PI credit.

Earn 20 PI Credits

Now, if you are an ABFM Diplomate, you may claim your PCMH certification by BCBSM for PI credit for Maintenance of Certification (MOC). Just upload your PCMH certification to the ABFM Performance Improvement website (instructions below) to receive 20 PI credits towards your Maintenance of Certification. This will satisfy your PI requirement for your three-year cycle.

Action Steps to Claim PI Credits

  1. Have an electronic copy of your PCMH certification available and sign into your MyABFM Portfolio.
  2. Type PCMH into the search bar and click “My Activities”.
  3. Click Blue Cross Blue Shield and “Start the Activity”.
  4. Upload your PCMH certification and complete the attestations as directed.

Avoid Duplication of Efforts

Being a board-certified family physician indicates your commitment to ongoing quality improvement in your practice to improve patient outcomes. The ABFM recognizes the quality improvement processes that you are already doing and seeks to avoid duplication to save you time.

If your practice is PCMH certified through NCQA or BCBSM, receive your PI credit for your Patient Centered Medical Home status of your practice to meet your MOC PI requirement today.

If your practice is PCMH certified through another organization, please contact Ann Williamson, RN, CCRC at [email protected] to assess if it meets ABFM's PI requirements.
