MAFP Board Member Voices Opinion on Increase of Urgent Care Centers

In response to Beaumont Health System's announcement that it will be opening 30 urgent care enters in the Detroit area by the end of 2019, MAFP Board Member Chris Bush, MD, FAAFP (Riverview) voiced his opinion by submitting an editorial to Crain's Detroit Business.

Published on November 25, Dr. Bush's editorial stresses the importance of the continuity of care that comes from patients having an enduring relationship with their primary care physician. He also addresses the "far-reaching implications" for patients and physicians when urgent care centers are used as the source for primary care.

"I would urge Beaumont Health system to reconsider this venture. The system should instead support the patient-centered medical homes that are either part of their system or are their community partners. Patient education can be provided to the general population that it is in their best interest to seek out a personal relationship with a physician," writes Dr. Bush.
