Each year, Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan—MAFP's philanthropic arm—selects two residents and two students to serve as Michigan delegates to the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents (NCFMR) and National Congress of Student Members (NCSM), respectively.

The Congresses, which convene during the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, are the official voices of AAFP's resident and student members. Through these forums, delegates elect their national officers and advocate on a wide variety of issues by introducing and giving testimony on resolutions, many of which ultimately become AAFP policy.

“The Congresses provide a great opportunity to pass resolutions to help shape the field of Family Medicine and make the student and resident voices heard within the Academy,” said Anne Drolet, who served as Michigan’s alternate student delegate in 2017 and will be traveling to Kansas City, Missouri, to represent Michigan students as MAFP's student delegate to NCSM, August 2-4.

To ensure the Michigan delegation hears the perspectives and concerns of student and resident members of MAFP before National Conference, Ann and her fellow delegates—Kayla Stefanko, DO, resident delegate; Christopher LaJeunesse, MD, resident alternate delegate; and Alec Ludwig, student alternate delegate—will host a webinar prior to the conference to educate student and resident MAFP members about Congress proceedings and how to draft resolutions. This, Ann said, provides the opportunity for all students and residents to be involved in the policy-making process, even if they aren’t able to attend the conference in-person. Watch MAFP's e-newsletter, Family Medicine Update, for information about the webinar.

Michigan Reception at National Conference

If you are attending National Conference, you're invited to the popular Michigan Reception, held annually to provide an opportunity for FUN and informal networking. Join other students, residents, and residency program directors and faculty from Michigan for hors d'oeuvres and a complimentary beverage on Friday, August 3, 5:30 - 7 pm CT, at the retro hot spot, Shark Bar, located in Kansas City's famous Power & Light District. There is no cost to attend, but advance registration is requested.
