James Applegate, MD, FAAFP of Grandville was recognized as 2019 Michigan Family Physician of the Year on August 3 during the Michigan Family Medicine Conference & Expo at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire.
Michigan Academy of Family Physicians—the largest medical specialty organization in the state—presents this prestigious award each year to a family physician who exemplifies the tradition of the family doctor in exemplary service to the patient, a Michigan community, and the specialty.
Dr. Applegate has served the West Michigan community as a family physician for 35 years, providing full scope primary and preventive healthcare, including obstetrics.
A 1979 graduate of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, Dr. Applegate completed residency at Kalamazoo Family Medicine Residency in 1983. He most recently practiced at Mercy Health Physician Partners.

In addition to providing direct patient care, Dr. Applegate also served as clinical associate professor and medical student preceptor in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He is a frequent health contributor on West Michigan’s Newsradio WOOD 1300 and 106.9 FM.
In service to his specialty, Dr. Applegate has been an active volunteer leader at Michigan Academy of Family Physicians. He served as MAFP president in 2002-2003 and has held many committee positions.
