Michigan House Panel Hears Testimony on Spina Bifida Bill

The Michigan House Health Policy Committee met on May 17 to hear presentations from various groups, including Detroit Medical Center and the Michigan Council for Maternal and Child Health, as well as debate House Bill 4584. This legislation would, upon a diagnosis and positive test for spina bifida, require clinicians to provide resources to patients, including evidence-based information provided by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, contact information regarding support programs and services that may be available, and hyperlinks to credible web sources.

The committee heard testimony on the legislation from the bill’s sponsor and committee chair, Representative Hank Vaupel (R-Fowlerville), as well as individuals who have been personally impacted by spina bifida. No vote was taken.
