When the AAFP Congress of Delegates (CoD) convenes in New Orleans, October 8-10, Michigan will be represented by a strong delegation.
Chapter Delegates Chris Bush, MD, FAAFP (Riverview) and David Walsworth (East Lansing) and Alternate Delegates Fred Van Alstine, MD, MBA (Gaylord) and Robert Jackson, MD, MMM, FAAFP (Allen Park) will help develop and set Academy policy over the course of the three-day meeting. Michigan’s delegation was nominated by the MAFP Board and voted upon by the MAFP membership at the MAFP Annual Meeting in July.
Also having a voice in the Congress will be Tina Tanner, MD, FAAFP (Montague), Woman Physician Delegate; Kristi VanDerKolk, MD (Kalamazoo), LGBT Physician/Physician Ally Delegate; and Harshini Jayasuriya, MD (Holt), Minority Physician Alternate Delegate. Drs. Tanner, VanDerKolk, and Jayasuria were previously elected to these positions at the National Conference of Constituency Leaders.
These delegates and alternate delegates will be joined by MAFP President Mary Marshall, MD, RN (Grand Blanc); President-elect Keerthy Krishnamani, MD, MBA (Grosse Pointe Shores); MAFP CEO Debra McGuire, MBA, IOM, CAE; and MAFP Legislative Liaison Matt Black.
Among the resolutions that the AAFP Congress of Delegates will consider are the following three proposals put forth by MAFP. These resolutions were approved by the MAFP membership at its 2018 Annual Meeting:
- PCP Modifiers to Increase Student Choice in Family Medicine
- All PCP Services are Preventive
- Reimburse Family Physicians for Mental Healthcare Services
"The other resolutions are wide-ranging, including such issues as Maintenance of Certification, economic issues, mental health, social determinants, and physician burnout," said MAFP's senior delegate, Dr. Bush.
The MAFP membership approved the following two additional resolutions at July’s Annual Meeting, which have been put forth to the MAFP Advocacy Committee for consideration:
- Physician Leadership in the Prevention of Gun Violence
- Aligning State Legislation and Regulatory Guidelines on Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Review Documentation in Michigan
