Fred Van Alstine, MD, MBA of Traverse City, Michigan, was honored with the 2018 “Archie” Award of Excellence on July 14 during the Michigan Family Medicine Conference & Expo at Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo
Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP)—the largest medical specialty organization in the state—periodically presents this award in honor of the late Archie W. Bedell, MD, PhD. A long-time Academy member and 1996-1997 president of MAFP, Dr. Bedell was a pioneer in Family Medicine education and a champion of the medically underserved and underrepresented.
"Dr. Van Alstine is most deserving of this coveted MAFP award, having distinguished himself on behalf of the Academy and in the healthcare community as an exemplary Family Physician," said MAFP Chair Loretta Leja, MD (Cheboygan).
He has spent over 36 years caring for patients in rural communities in Michigan, in addition to serving in many other capacities throughout his distinguished career to benefit the health of Michiganders, including as medical director and associate medical director of Health Plus of Michigan, associate clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, preceptor at the University of Michigan Medical School, and medical examiner for Shiawassee County.
Dr. Van Alstine has also served in many volunteer leadership positions, giving of his time and expertise to advance the specialty of Family Medicine. He was a member of the MAFP Board of Directors for over a decade, holding the presidential seat in 2013-2014, and was recently elected by his MAFP colleagues to serve as an Alternate Delegate representing Michigan to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of Delegates.
Today, Dr. Van Alstine is associate medical director for Munson Hospice, and he practices palliative care in Traverse City, having completed a Palliative Care Fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta in 2017.
