2019 Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute Applications Due Mar. 1
AAFP Foundation is accepting applications until March 1 from student and resident members of AAFP who are interested in participating in the 2019 Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute (ELI)—a year-long program designed to cultivate leaders who will guide Family Medicine into the future.
Family Medicine residents in their first or second year, and medical students in their second, third, or fourth year when the program kicks off July 25-28, immediately following AAFP's National Conference of Family Medicine Resident's & Medical Students, are eligible to apply.
Tiffani Strickland, a Wayne State University School of Medicine student, is one of three individuals from Michigan selected to participate in this year's ELI. Each year since the program's inception in 2015, a student and/or resident from Michigan has been chosen for the ELI.
Of her experience at the half-way point of the 2018 program, Tiffani said, "The Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute has provided me the space and support to think critically about how to improve my community. The goal of my project is to improve students' abilities to recognize psychiatric disorders among our homeless patients, and provide them with the appropriate mental health resources so as to improve mental health access in this population"
Tiffani added that she greatly appreciates the incredible mentors who help the scholars navigate barriers they encounter and celebrate successes through the duration of the program.
"The Emerging Leader Institute has really supported my growth as a leader and emphasizes the education I've gained, more than the finished product," she said.
In addition to gaining valuable leadership experience, the selected scholars receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend AAFP's National Conference in Kansas City, MO, and participate in the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute.
