Kristi VanDerKolk, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Kristi VanDerKolk earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed family medicine residency at University of Michigan in 2012.

Her first job post-residency was practicing family medicine at Family Health Center, a local federally qualified health center in Kalamazoo. She then joined the faculty of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, where today she is an assistant professor and serves as program director of the family medicine residency program in Kalamazoo.

Dr. VanDerKolk’s clinical and research interests include undergraduate and graduate medical educations, physician burnout and well-being, and transgender and gender diverse (TGD) healthcare. Gender-affirming care is integrated into the comprehensive primary and preventive care offered in her family medicine practice.

In addition to serving on the MAFP Board of Directors, Dr. VanDerKolk is a member of the Advocacy Committee.

“I initially volunteered because I was Interested in becoming more involved in the overall operations of MAFP, as well as improve its utility to members.”

Outside of WMed and the Academy, Dr. VanDerKolk is affiliated with the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors.

She is affiliated with Ascension Borgess Hospital and Bronson Methodist Hospital and earned the AAFP Degree of Fellow in 2020.
