Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is the state’s largest specialty physician association. With more than 4,200 members, MAFP is dedicated to assisting family physicians and their practices as they work to ensure high-quality, cost-effective healthcare for patients of all ages.
News & Announcements
Following the first session day of the 102nd Michigan Legislature, House and Senate committee assignments were announced and priority bills were introduced. Of note, the Senate split the previous Health Policy & Human Services Committee, creating a Health Policy Committee and a separate Housing & Human Services Committee; in the House, a Behavioral Health Subcommittee of the Health Policy Committee was established; and initial bills focused on income tax reform, repealing the 1931 abortion ban, adding sexual orientation and gender identify to the Elliot-Larsen Civil Right Act, revising the presidential primary election date, and establishing the framework for impending supplemental appropriations bills.
During her inauguration speech on Jan. 1, Gov. Whitmer hinted at her upcoming policy priorities, namely taking action on climate change and common-sense gun reforms and helping working families with the rising costs of goods and services. Next up, the 2023-2024 Michigan Legislature will convene for its first session day on Jan. 11, Gov. Whitmer will deliver her fifth State of the State address on Jan. 25, and she will release her Executive Budget proposal in February. Meanwhile, MAFP is continuing to advocate for family medicine and prepare advocates for the 2023 Michigan Family Medicine Advocacy Day on March 22.
Fourteen members selected from a competitive application process participated in MAFP’s 2022 Advocacy and Leadership Development Program designed to enhance members’ leadership and advocacy skills as well as media and government relations.
