Family Medicine Interest Groups

Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIGs) are an excellent resource for students interested in exploring family medicine in an informal, yet educational (and fun!) setting. They provide programming and information that may not be offered in the medical school curriculum. Medical students can learn about the history of family medicine and its future, experience a wide range of clinical skills and procedures important to family physicians, and have the opportunity to network with family physicians.

Funding Sources

Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan FMIG Funding Initiative

Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan (MAFP's philanthropic arm) invites Family Medicine Interest Groups at Michigan's medical schools to apply for grant funding for the upcoming academic year. The funding is intended to support FMIG activities and efforts to increase student exposure to and interest in the specialty.

Family Medicine Student Organization Grant Program

This program, supported by American Academy of Family Physicians and AAFP Foundation, funds a variety of medical student groups doing innovative work to grow and diversify the family medicine workforce and advance primary care. Two funding streams are available:

• Core grant funding supports regular Family Medicine Interest Group operations
• Special grant funding supports new efforts, such as a new or revamped event, project, or program

Applications open in early September.
