Legislative Update: Uncertainty Surrounds Legislative Adjournment, Potential Special Session Looms

In Lansing, uncertainty still swirls about the remainder of the 2023 legislative session. The legislature is expected to adjourn sooner than the initial plan of late December. However, the exact time of that adjournment remains unknown. There is a possibility that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will call a special session if the legislature adjourns early. Legislative leaders have not released any date or plan, so this is all speculation based on information released so far.

Lansing is buzzing with rumors of a potential Senate Health Policy Committee hearing on Senate Bill 279. A timeline for this meeting is currently unknown but could come as early as next week. It is anticipated that any meeting would hold testimony, with no expected vote for passage. MAFP continues to meet with and educate lawmakers on the benefits of physician-led team-based care as the best care for patients and share our opposition to Senate Bill 279. If this bill is brought forward for a committee hearing, MAFP will issue a full action alert and provide testimony opposing it.

Several legislators have key policy priorities they wish to advance before the adjournment. As a result, we anticipate an uptick in session and legislative activity in the days ahead. Stay tuned for further updates during this period of uncertainty.
