Introducing the 2024 Student Externs!

Each year, Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan selects student members of MAFP to participate in a 4-6 week clinical and/or research experience tailored to their interests and under the mentorship of a family physician member of MAFP. The goal is to stimulate student interest in the family physician specialty. Selected externs receive a $2,000 stipend after completing the externship. Funding is provided by matching grants from Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan and AAFP Foundation. Congratulations to the  Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) student externs for 2024: Claire Lupini (M2 at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine - Lansing) and Stephen Venable (M3 at Wayne State School of Medicine).

Claire Lupini

M2 at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine - Lansing

Lupini actively contributes to her medical school's Family Medicine Interest Group, where she serves as Co-President. Lupini's interest in family medicine was ignited during her first year of medical school when she spent time in an outpatient family medicine clinic, deepening her curiosity about the field. Eager to explore the intricacies of family medicine further, Lupini will complete a four-week clinical externship experience with Dr. Scott Ross at MyMichigan Health in Midland, MI. During this externship, she will delve into obstetric care and academic medicine, spending time one-on-one with residents in the family medicine residency program.

"Through the exploration I have done thus far, I have developed two strong interests for what I would love to include in my future practice as a family physician: obstetric care and academic medicine," Lupini said. "The externship that I have designed with Dr. Scott Ross will help me explore both of these career paths."

 Stephen Venable

Stephen Venable

M3 at Wayne State School of Medicine

Venable's interest in family medicine is fueled by a desire to serve Detroit's most vulnerable populations. During his four-week externship, he will collaborate closely with his family medicine preceptor to provide essential medical care to culturally and ethnically diverse individuals, particularly those experiencing homelessness. Venable plans to participate in street medicine programs, offering compassionate care to marginalized communities. Additionally, he will engage in gender-affirming care initiatives through the Henry Ford Health System, supporting at-risk groups on their individual journeys. By partnering with the Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) clinic, Venable hopes to contribute to providing comprehensive primary healthcare services to underserved individuals in Detroit, emphasizing a holistic approach to healthcare within the community.
