Legislature Kicks Off 103rd Session with Focus on Minimum Wage, Sick Leave
The House and Senate gaveled in to kick off the 103rd legislature last week. While the Senate will largely stay the same, except for changes to committees that will occur due to former Sen. McDonald-Rivet leaving for Congress, the House adopted new rules and procedures under Speaker Matt Hall (R). Committee assignments have yet to be finalized, but we are aware of which committees will exist. Eighteen standing committees have been named, down three from last term. There will be 246 committee seats combined, down from last term’s 276 seats.
The House and Senate will prioritize the tipped wage and earned sick leave act as any legislative changes to the law have to be completed before February when minimum wage is set to increase in the state. Additionally, the legislature will need to provide funds for the state’s road bond, which also expires this year.
