Dr. Klamo Highlights Prevention Strategies Amid Rising Respiratory Illnesses in Media Outreach
Rachel M. Klamo, DO, MS, FAAFP, is collaborating with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to champion the Risk Less. Do More. campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of immunizations for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza.
In the Jan. 9, 2025 WWMT-TV article Dr. Klamo highlighted the recent significant rise in respiratory illnesses with cases expected to continue increasing. She emphasized the importance of prevention through vaccination, to reduce the strain on healthcare systems and mitigate the impact on communities. Vaccines remain widely available, and taking proactive measures can help lessen the burden of these illnesses.
“A lot of people are just getting back to the 2025 school year and work environments,” Klamo said. “So you had people around their family and friends, and now they're getting back into their workplaces and their school environments, exposing that group of people to each other.”
Dr. Klamo also noted the impact increased illness is having on hospitals in a Jan. 10 Detroit Free Press article.
"Hospitals in southeast Michigan, for sure, are operating at pretty high capacity," she said. "There's just a high burden of illness right now, and a lot of it is respiratory."
