Student & Resident Education Committee: Committed to Future of Family Medicine

House, Senate Community Health Budgets Clear First Hurdle

This week, House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Community Health completed work on their respective budget proposals for Fiscal Years (FY) 2016 and 2017. Both budgets had notable differences from the Governor’s budget proposal released in February.

Scholarships Available to Represent Michigan at AAFP National Conference

The MAFP Foundation is seeking delegates and alternate delegates to represent Michigan during the 2015 National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students on July 30-August 1 in Kansas City, Missouri. The MAFP Foundation will provide a $1,000 scholarship for the chosen delegates and alternate delegates.

Raising the Profile of Family Medicine in Michigan

This week, February 22-28, has officially been declared Family Medicine Week by the House of Representatives–with 32 cosponsors, House Resolution 18 was adopted, and reads, "We support a robust, primary-care based health care system and recognize the key role Family Physicians play in making Michigan healthy." Despite Cuts, Governor's Budget Proposal Has Bright Spots for Primary Care

This week, Governor Snyder released budget recommendations for Fiscal Years (FY) 2016 and 2017. While some of the recommendations raised concerns within the health care community—most notably, an 8.9 percent cut to Graduate Medical Education funding for the current year—there were bright spots for primary care providers.

MAFP President-elect Visits White House

We the People, an initiative launched as a way for Americans to petition their government about issues that matter to them, hosted the ‘WTPMeetUp’ at the White House October 23, 2014, to celebrate the third anniversary of the movement. Dr. Kim Yu (Frankenmuth), Family Physician and MAFP president-elect, was selected as one of 14 affiliates to attend the event. While there, she was able to speak about the importance of the Health is Primary campaign and advocated for Family Medicine.
