MAFP's Foundation Helps You Meet State of Michigan CME Requirements

One requirement of medical licensure in Michigan is that physicians (MD and DO) complete a minimum of 150 hours of continuing medical education credits every three years. This includes:

  • 1 hour of CME in medical ethics
  • 3 hours of CME in pain and symptom management
  • 3 hours of CME in implicit bias

Physicians seeking initial MD and DO licensure must have completed 1 hour of CME in human trafficking prior to applying for a license; this one-time training is not counted toward the 150 CME credit hours requirement.

To help members meet these requirements, Michigan Academy of Family Physician's philanthropic arm, Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan, offers live and on-demand training. The CME credits earned by attending these trainings are also approved by American Academy of Family Physicians and may be reported toward the 150 credits needed every three years to maintain Academy membership.

Track & Report CME

Neither the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs nor the Michigan Board of Medicine or Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery maintain records of earned CME credits; physicians are required to maintain their own records and keep documentation for a minimum of four years from the date of applying for license renewal. Both boards conduct random audits after each renewal period, so keeping accurate records and having complete documentation is essential.

As an AAFP member, you have access to Primary+, a member-exclusive online portal where you can maintain a centralized record of CME credits and log procedures and other professional development. This tool provides you with 24-hour access to your CME transcript, which you can email to other organizations to which you belong.

As a service for members earning CME credit through MAFP/Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan-hosted events and webinars, MAFP will report earned credits to AAFP.
